SA MTB CUP SERIES XCO #1
On the 3rd of February, the first SA CUP XCO was hosted at Coetzenburg (Stellenbosch University). Our youngest team member Wessel Botha competed in the u23 category, racing with the elites and some of the world’s best XCO riders. The course was very challenging as Wessel explains, “It was a super hard race, a technical course, very hot and way more dust than I expected.”

On the 10th of March 2018 the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Series will host the first leg of the series on the same course at Coetzenburg. This attracted a particularly strong field at the SA Cup as the riders had a chance to experience and practice the course in a racing environment, producing a strong international and national field ahead of the World Cup.

Wessel had a good start but was faced with some technical difficulties when his saddle shifted, and he had to stop in the technical zone to fix the issue. After the third lap the saddle was finally where he wanted it and he started to catch the riders ahead of him. Wessel said, “I’m really happy with my performance and where my form is at the moment. A hard day in the saddle but I am happy with the result, looking forward to recovering this week before Tankwa Trek which starts on Thursday (9th of February).”
Well done to Wessel on an impressive performance, finishing 12th overall and 2nd u23 (South African).
We look forward to seeing the team in action this weekend at Tankwa Trek.
